Lesson Plan Ideas for Music Teachers Using GarageBand on iPad
I created these iPad GarageBand lesson ideas to make your next class easier, more engaging, and tech-confident. Each project is simple, classroom-ready, and can be run tomorrow.
In this live training session, I shared a handful of lesson ideas from my course and lesson plan collection for GarageBand on iPad: The Music Teacher’s Guide to Using GarageBand on iPad. The course is available as part of a Midnight Music Community subscription.
Each lesson in the course includes two short videos:
- A Teacher Notes walkthrough – with tips, pitfalls to avoid, and classroom management tricks for school networks.
- A Student-ready video you can simply press play on while you circulate and coach. You’ll also get printable lesson plans, templates, and checklists.
The course focuses on GarageBand for iPad (with notes for Chromebook, Mac, and PC workflows). I’ve designed everything with real classroom challenges in mind – managed iPads, delayed app updates, and the need for a reliable Plan B. Midnight Music Community members also receive PD certificates once they’ve completed the course.
Here are the five “taster” lessons I shared:
- What’s in a Name (Sampler Beat): students record their spoken name in Sampler, play it across the keyboard, layer an 8-bar rhythm, and add drums and (optional) bass. It’s a low-pressure, high-confidence activity!
- World Music (Erhu Melody): Students research, listen, and compose a short pentatonic melody on GarageBand’s Erhu instrument, then add an accompaniment or loop.
- Dr. Seuss Ostinato & Rap: Build a spoken ostinato from a book title, then record a rap with effects, drums, and clear song sections. Great for group work.
- Classical Smash (Pachelbel Remix): Record the bass line, add Smart Guitar Autoplay chords (with a special tip for reordering the chord strips), program a beat with the Beat Sequencer, and write a new melody on top.
- Superhero Soundtracks (Score to Picture): Compose a strong heroic musical theme (with brass and a driving rhythm), add a voice-over, then sync your track in iMovie with a short public-domain Superman clip.We look at keeping clips short (15 seconds to two minutes) so you actually finish within a single class period.
During the course I’ll guide you through the iPad flow, switching between Instrument View and Track View, recording in Sections for quick duplication, choosing the right drum method for your class, and using voice effects to help shy students participate.
Inside the course you’ll also find an Introduction Module which covers the basics of using the GarageBand app, or for teachers returning to GarageBand after a break. It covers the fastest paths through common tasks, quirks to expect on school devices, and the checklists I use to make lessons run smoothly.
If you liked this preview, join the Midnight Music Community, where you’ll get access to the full course including the students lesson videos. Plus you’ll earn a professional development certificate when you complete the course.
My goal is simple: less tech stress, more music. You’ll get clear steps, student-ready videos, and resources you can use tomorrow.

I have just watched your video on the 5 lesson plan ideas for Garageband on iPad.
I use Garageband regularly with my music students and I feel quite confident using the iPad app. LOVE the new ideas and I can’t wait to use them. I have a special 2 day course for seventeen 11,12,& 13 year olds coming up in a couple of weeks. I can use a couple of these ideas. Thank you so much.
That’s great to hear Maggie 🙂 I’d love to know how you go with it!
