Technology in the music classroom changes fast. One year, a tool is brand new, the next it’s already been replaced by something more innovative. For music teachers, it can feel impossible to keep up. That’s exactly why the Ultimate Free Music Tech Resources Guide 2025-2026 exists — to save you time, cut through the overwhelm of endless searching, and give you a clear, curated collection of the best free (or freemium) tools available right now.
Each year, my team and I update it with new resources, fresh categories, and improved organization so you can quickly find the right tool for your classroom. Whether you’re teaching elementary, middle school, or high school, there’s plenty inside to make your job easier and your students more engaged!
What Is the Ultimate Free Music Tech Resources Guide?
In 2009, I presented a session called “Music Technology on a Shoestring” at a conference. The idea was simple: gather a handful of free tech resources that teachers could use without a big budget. The response was so positive that a few years later, I compiled those lists into a single downloadable guide.
Fast forward to today: the guide has grown into the most comprehensive, free annual collection of music tech tools available to teachers worldwide. It has been downloaded by thousands of educators, updated every year, and redesigned to be easier than ever to navigate — featuring clickable links, category breakdowns, and suggestions for classroom use.
What’s New in the 2025-2026 Edition
Each year brings exciting changes, and this year is no exception. Here’s what’s new in this edition:
- 25 brand new tools added across categories like Composing & Songwriting, Virtual Instruments, Science of Sound, and Reference Tools.
- A brand-new Coding section, perfect for STEAM projects where students can explore music and programming together.
- Fresh AI-powered tools for music transcription, stem-splitting, and productivity — reflecting the biggest trends in education technology.
- Updated Accessible Creativity Tools that make music-making inclusive for all learners.

How the Guide Is Organized
The Ultimate Free Music Tech Resources Guide 2025-2026 is divided into more than 25 categories so you can jump straight to what you need:
- Assessment, Games & Quizzes
- Audio Recording & Editing
- Composing & Songwriting
- Music Discovery & History
- Virtual Instruments
- Notation Software
- Manage Your Class
- Free Lesson Plans & Professional Development and much more!

Every listing has:
- A short description of what the tool does
- A clickable link
- Suggestions for classroom use
- Notes about upgrades or pro features if available

Instead of endlessly Googling ideas, simply open the guide, select a category, and explore tools that have been thoroughly tested and curated specifically for music educators.

If I am a member, how can I teach a class of 30 students? How can they access the materials needed
Hi Carin! We have a mix of courses and PD inside the Midnight Music Community. Most is professional development just for you the teacher (showing you tips/lesson ideas/training etc) and some – like the course for GarageBand, Soundtrap and Bandlab contain lesson videos specifically for you to show to the students. We allow those student lesson videos to be downloaded so that you can upload them into your LMS of choice and then give your students access. That way the students could watch them independently, leaving you to help individuals around the classroom. The membership is setup for just the teacher to log in – not the students. Hope that answers your question!
